100th Anniversary of The Hard Hat
It has been 100 years since the first hard hat patent was awarded. Global Glove and Safety Manufacturing and Bullhead Safety® are celebrating this centennial anniversary by introducing a full line of hard hats. Not only will Global Glove offer a full line of products to protect hands and arms, Bullhead Safety™ will continue to protect the eyes and face. Together, these dynamos of the safety industry will now offer a new safety product category. The new offering will help protect the head, another commonly injured body part. This new product line is designed to help lessen injuries from falling objects, debris, electricity, bad weather or bumping the head.
Hard hats have an interesting history. In 1915, a hat was designed to protect miners from falling objects in gold and copper mines. The Hard-Boiled® hat was patented in 1919 by Bullard. It was manufactured out of a steamed canvas, glue and leather brim and was fashioned after the doughboy helmet worn by soldiers in World War 1.
Construction workers were required to wear hard hats during the building of the Hoover Dam in 1931, and then in 1933, the first “Hard-Hat Area” was designated in San Francisco at the construction site of the Golden Gate Bridge. Hard hats and safety nets were ground-breaking safety requirements at the Golden Gate Bridge which have evolved into today’s hard hats and fall-protection requirements in all industries. At the Golden Gate Bridge, falling rivets at the site could cause serious injury. Here was born the industrial hard hat.
The Hard-Boiled hat evolved into the aluminum hard hat, which was, unfortunately, a great conductor of electricity. In the 1940s, fiberglass replaced the aluminum hard hats.
Thermoplastics including polycarbonate replaced the fiberglass hard hats in the 1950s and 1960s. Today’s hard hats are mostly made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or advanced engineering resins.
In 1982, the adjustable ratchet suspension was introduced which has become an integral component of every hard hat.
For this historic year, marking the 100th anniversary of this major development in the safety industry, Global Glove and Safety has teamed with Bullhead Safety to offer a full line of head protection with their new hard hats and accessories.
Global Glove and Safety, an undeniable leader in design innovation, continues to bring the latest in innovation and creativity to the safety marketplace with an astounding number of new products for hand protection.
Safety glasses by Bullhead Safety have numerous special features including anti-fog, ballistic rated, arc flash rated, welding, polarized and readers. They are smart-designed with the latest design innovations to maximize safety and comfort with unmatched quality and attractive appearance. These features encourage workers to always wear protective gear if there is even a remote chance for injury.
Bullhead Safety Head Protection products include bump caps and baseball style caps with polyethylene inner shells for impact protection in occupational areas where hard hats are not required or at events such as baseball games. Bullhead Safety™ Head Protection accessory brackets are made from nylon or aluminum and fit on both cap and full brim style hard hats to offer ANSI Z87.1-2015 rated impact protection.
For hard hat areas, Bullhead Safety Head Protection products that are rated as ANSI Z89.1-2014 Type I, Class E, Class G and Class C hard hats are being introduced.
ANSI Type 1 hats offer impact protection from a blow to the top of the head.
The class in ANSI ratings represents the hard hat electrical performance.
Class E hard hats reduce the exposure to high voltage, up to 20,000 volts (phase to ground). Bullhead Safety Head Protection hard hats made from HPPE include products HH-F1-B, HH-F1-C, HH-F1-W, HH-F1-Y which are ANSI Z89.1-2014 Type 1, Class E rated (Electrical) for High Voltage.
Class G hard hats are designed to reduce exposure to low voltage, up to 2,200 volts (phase to ground). Bullhead Safety Head Protection hard hats made from HPPE include HH-C1-B, HH-C1-W, HH-C1-Y, HH-C2-B, HH-C2-C, HH-C2-G, HH-C2-K, HH-C2-O, HH-C2-W, HH-C2-Y which are ANSI Z89.1-2014 Type 1, Class G rated (General) for Low Voltage.
Class C hard hats are designed for areas where no electrical protection is needed. Bullhead Safety Head Protection hard hats made from HPPE include HH-C3-C, HH-C3-B, HH-C3-W, HH-C3-Y which are ANSI Z89.1-2014 Type 1, Class C rated (Conductive) for No Electrical Contact.
